Shah Mahmood Qureshi was born on 22 June 1956 and his current age is 68 years. He was born in Multan district of Punjab province. Shah Mahmood Qureshi's father's name is Sajjad Hussain Qureshi. He belongs to Syed family. Shah Mahmood Qureshi started his primary education from a school in Lahore and then studied at Aitchison College Intermediate and then received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Forman Christian College.
He then received his Master of Arts degree from Corpus Christie's College, Cambridge. Shah Mahmood Qureshi also has a B.A degree which he has obtained from Punjab University. Shah Mahmood Qureshi is married. His son's name is Zain Mahmood Qureshi and he also has two daughters. One daughter's name is Mehar Bano Qureshi and the other daughter's name is Gauhar Bano Qureshi.
Shah Mahmood Qureshi belongs to a zamindar family and he has also been the president of Farmers Association of Pakistan. Shah Mahmood Qureshi's family is of holy lineage and is the custodian of Bahaulddin Zakaria Multani's shrine in Multan, which provides a substantial income to his family. Leaders of other political parties have said that they use religion for politics, however, in 2014, they rejected these claims, saying "I have never used religion for political gain.

Shah Mahmood Qureshi was first elected to the Punjab Provincial Assembly from a constituency in Multan in the 1985 general elections, which were held on a non-partisan basis during the Zia-ul-Haq military regime.
He joined Pakistan Muslim League (N) in 1986. He was a member of the Punjab Provincial Assembly for about 9 years from 1985 to 1993 and served in various positions in the provincial cabinet from 1988 to 1993. Shah Mahmood Qureshi has also been the mayor of Multan from 1996 and later from 2000 to 2002. Shah Mahmood Qureshi was re-elected to the National Assembly of Pakistan for the second time from Multan on the seat of the People's Party in the 2002 Pakistani general elections and he defeated Makhdoom Javed Hashmi.
According to sources, he used his influence as the mayor of Multan to win the 2002 elections. In 2006, Benazir Bhutto appointed Shah Mahmood Qureshi as the president of Pakistan People's Party Punjab to revive the popularity of the People's Party in South Punjab, given his good experience. He was also elected for the third time to the National Assembly of Pakistan from Multan in the 2008 general elections. According to sources, Shah Mahmood Qureshi was a possible candidate for Prime Minister of Pakistan in the coalition government led by People's Party. However, Shah Mahmood Qureshi was given the post of Foreign Minister in the then Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gillani cabinet.
After taking over as foreign minister, Shah Mahmood Qureshi immediately made it clear that he was committed to establishing peace in the region and maintaining friendly relations with neighboring India was among his top priorities. In 2011, Shah Mahmood Qureshi also faced criticism in Pakistan when it was discovered that his son, Zain Mahmood Qureshi, was working as a legislative fellow in the office of Senator John Kerry. In February 2011, the government of Pakistan offered Shah Mahmood Qureshi the post of Minister of Water and Power during a cabinet reshuffle. He then declined, saying he was "not interested in the Ministry of Water and Power rather than External Affairs, and in February 2011, he lost the portfolio of Foreign Minister following the Raymond Davis affair.
In November 2011, Shah Mahmood Qureshi resigned from the People's Party, he had been in this party for the past 20 years. He also quit his National Assembly membership. He said that I had joined People's Party under the leadership of Benazir Bhutto, and now this party is no longer the party of martyr Ms. Benazir Bhutto, now it has become Zardari's party. He said that he will no longer be a part of this party and therefore resigned from the party membership.
Shah Mahmood Qureshi is one of the three prominent politicians of Multan district, the other two being Yusuf Raza Gillani and Javed Hashmi and these three are considered to be political rivals of each other. Sources said that Shah Mahmood Qureshi will join the Muslim League (N) again. At the end of November 2011, Shah Mahmood Qureshi announced his joining Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf in a rally in Ghotki. On 4 December 2011, he was appointed as the Vice Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf as the Parliamentary Leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf in the National Assembly of Pakistan.
In the 2016 intra-party elections, Shah Mahmood Qureshi was re-appointed as the Vice Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf. Shah Mahmood Qureshi is considered one of the three most senior officials of the party. He was re-elected Member of National Assembly from Multan on the ticket of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf in the 2013 general elections. Shah Mahmood Qureshi was re-elected to the National Assembly as a candidate of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf from Constituency No. NA-156 in the 2018 general elections.
After winning the National Assembly seat, Shah Mahmood Qureshi emerged as the nominee of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf for the post of Speaker. According to sources, Imran Khan persuaded him to take over the post because of his long parliamentary experience. However, Shah Mahmood Qureshi was reluctant to take the portfolio. On August 18, Imran Khan formally announced his federal cabinet and nominated Shah Mahmood Qureshi as the foreign minister. On August 20, 2018, he took oath as Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs in the Federal Cabinet of Prime Minister Imran Khan and completed his services.
Imran Khan's no-confidence motion led to his government leaving and Shah Mahmood Qureshi also resigned from the post of Foreign Minister and dozens of cases were filed against Imran Khan. After his government left, when Imran Khan was arrested in a case, his workers protested and during the protest, unknown persons attacked military places, Shah Mahmood Qureshi was also arrested and he is still in jail. The representatives of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf could not fully participate in the elections held on February 8, but still they did not lose heart and fielded independent candidates. Independent candidates of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf took the field and stood with Imran Khan.
